Booked a flight and wondering what to pack? Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or gearing up for your first flight, the right essentials can make all the difference. In this guide, I’m sharing my top travel essentials for women to ensure a comfortable and stylish journey.
Luggage + Packing
- Sturdy Luggage: Luggage can be pricey, but mid-priced options often deliver durability and the features you need. Some of my favorite brands include Away and Beis. You can also explore your local Marshalls, TJ Maxx, or Nordstrom Rack for great deals under $100.
- Personal Item: Calpak has some of my favorite personal items, that are both spacious and compact enough to fit under the seat in front of you. I personally have the Luka duffel, and have been eyeing the backpack for longer trips!
- Packing Cubes: Keep your belongings well-organized with packing cubes. I like to categorize my clothes by day, or by place for longer, multi-part trips. This makes it easy to find what I need without rummaging through my entire bag.
- Toiletry Bag: A compact toiletry bag ensures your essentials are easily accessible. This is one of my favorite travel essentials for women, and I have been using it for years! You can hang it up for easy access to all of your travel size toiletries. I also find it large enough to hold both my toiletries and makeup!
- Makeup Bag: If you want a larger bag specifically for makeup, this is a great option! I have this one and love it! The bag lays flat when opened and makes all of your products easily accessible.
- Jewelry Organizer: If you like to travel with lots of jewelry, a jewelry organizer is the way to go. It prevents tangling and ensures they make it to your destination safely.
In-Flight Essentials
- Travel Toiletry Pouch: I like to have a small, clear pouch to store a few toiletry essentials for during the flight. This prevents any potential spills in your bag, while allowing easy access to a toothbrush, lip balm, hand lotion, and any other items you might want during your flight.
- Hand Sanitizer: It is always a good idea to have hand sanitizer on you, especially when traveling! I always keep a travel-sized hand sanitizer in my purse, and bring it with me when I travel. An absolute must for keeping germs at bay when flying.
- Hand Cream: My skin often feels very dried out after flying. I like to keep a hand cream in my travel bag so that I can keep my hands hydrated.
- Lip Balm: Regardless of my travel status, I always have lip balm on me. It is especially important when traveling, so don’t forget to pack your favorite lip balm!
- Face Mist: For longer journeys, I like to bring a refreshing face mist. This one also contains Hypochlorous acid, which helps reduce redness and kill any bacteria on your skin.
- Travel Toothbrush/Paste: There’s nothing worse than bad breath, especially on a long flight. I always have a toothbrush on hand if I need a quick refresh!
- Hair Tie: Keep your hair out of your face with a hair tie or scrunchie. I always keep on one my wrist to tie my hair back if needed.
- Mini hair brush or comb: Especially for long travel days, it can be nice to get rid of tangles. I love this travel sized brush, and always keep it in my travel bag!
- Water Bottle: Stay hydrated by bringing a reusable water bottle. Most airports have water stations to refill, and you can always ask for more water on the plane.
- Headphones: Noise-cancelling headphones are a must! They block out both the airplane noise and chatter from people around you. Plus, listening to your favorite music or podcasts helps time fly when you’re traveling.
- Kindle/Tablet: I have recently gotten back into reading, and always bring my Kindle when I travel. A tablet is another great option, you can use it to read or watch movies and TV shows. Always helps to have a few different sources of entertainment to keep you occupied.
- Mini Medical Kit: Be prepared for any minor health needs with a compact medical kit containing essentials like ibuprofen, band-aids, and any necessary medications.
- Comfortable Shoes: Stick to comfortable shoes when traveling. There is nothing worse than your feet hurting when navigating through the airport. I normally wear sneakers or an athletic shoe!
- Layers for the Plane: Airplane cabins can vary in temperature. Laying ensures you stay comfortable, whether it’s warm or chilly. I almost always have a light sweatshirt or jacket with me. This is also great because it won’t take up room in your suitcase!
- Neck Pillow: If you have an overnight flight, a neck pillow can help you get some sleep. I love that this one folds up small to fit in my carry-on! If I am tight on space, I also hook it to the outside (there is a cover so it won’t be exposed during your travels).
- Portable Charger: Keep your devices charged with a portable charger. There are almost always chargers available in airports and on the plane, but it can sometimes be more convenient to have a charger in your bag that you can use anywhere.
- Electronics Organizer: Avoid the frustration of tangled cords by using an electronics organizer. Keep your chargers, earphones, and cables neatly sorted.
- Sunglasses: Protect your eyes and add a touch of style with a chic pair of sunglasses. I don’t typically wear these until I arrive at my destination, but never hurts to have them accessible!
- Travel Wallet: Organize your travel documents, cards, and currency in a dedicated travel wallet for easy access. I really like this option from Amazon, it is the perfect size for my passport and a few other essential cards.
In Your Carry-on
- Travel Hair Tools: For those who like to maintain their hairstyle on the road, compact travel straighteners and blow dryers are essential. I haven’t found a travel sized curler that works very well, so I opt for one that has interchangeable barrels for a variety of curl types on the go. Make sure your tools have dual-voltage if you’re going to a country that has different voltage than where you live.
- Travel Adaptor: Don’t forget a universal travel adaptor to ensure your electronic devices stay charged, no matter where you are.
