Accutane Skincare Routine & Product Recommendations
Accutane can make your skin dry and sensitive. Sharing my accutane skincare routine and holy grail products!
I recently started my second round of Accutane, and I’ve experimented with a lot of different products to find a routine that works for me. Simplifying your skincare regimen and avoiding frequent product switches can make a significant difference in maintaining happy, hydrated skin. Read on to discover the Accutane skincare routine that has been a savior for my dry skin this winter!
Morning Routine
Step 1: Cleanse
Start your day by rinsing with water or using a gentle cleanser.
My preferred gentle cleanser is from Neutrogena. While I also loved the Cetaphil gentle cleanser, I unfortunately developed an allergy to their reformulated version.
Step 2: Moisturize
Given my persistently dry skin, I stick to the same moisturizer both morning and night. If I plan to wear makeup, I opt for a lighter moisturizer during the day. Additionally, I generously apply lip balm first thing in the AM and throughout the day.
My holy grail moisturizer is from SkinFix, although it can be a bit pricey. Fortunately, they offer refills, which is a helpful cost-saving option. I also recommend the Naturium moisturizer for daytime use. In my previous round of Accutane, the Cetaphil moisturizer in the tub was a favorite until the reformulation caused an allergic reaction, ugh! Can never have enough lip balm, and I’ve tried them all! My recent fav is the Naturium lip balm, which is a decent dupe for Summer Fridays!
Step 3: Protect
Sunscreen is crucial, especially during Accutane treatment when the skin becomes extra sensitive to the sun. Opt for a sunscreen with moisturizing properties to enhance skin hydration. I also use a lip balm with SPF throughout the day.
The Sun Bum face SPF has been my go-to for years, providing hydration without a greasy feel. For those who don’t mind a slightly greasier texture, the Tula protect + glow sunscreen is another excellent option. Recently, I discovered an SPF lip balm from Jack Black that has quickly become a staple in my routine.

Step 1: Cleanse
Remove makeup and sunscreen using your preferred method. I use an oil cleanser or micellar water. Follow up with a gentle cleanser to cleanse your skin.
My favorite makeup remover is the Bioderma micellar water. It’s gentle and doesn’t aggravate my dry, sensitive skin. For added convenience, transfer it to a spray bottle for direct application to the face. I then use the same gentle Neutrogena cleanser mentioned earlier.
Step 2: Moisturize
I stick to the same moisturizer from my morning routine. As an evening shower person, I moisturize my body post-shower.
The moisturizers listed in my morning routine are suitable for the evening as well, and I included my go-to body moisturizer.
Step 3: Moisturize Again
I double up on moisturizer in the evening. Applying a second layer after the initial one has absorbed for a few minutes helps combat dryness. For particularly dry spots, such as around the nose, I use a rich, balmy moisturizer to lock in moisture.
My preferred super-thick moisturizer is from Avene. It effectively soothes inflamed or peeling skin without causing breakouts.
Extra Tips & Tricks
Here are a few bonus hydration tips that I have learned along the way.
Tip 1: Water Water Water
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water—more than you think you need. I have a water bottle with me at all times.
Tip 2: Short Showers
I love a long, hot shower. But when on Accutane, I have tried to keep my showers short and only use luke warm water. This will keep your skin from drying out too much. Be sure to moisturize your face and body after getting out of the shower to seal in moisture!
Tip 3: Hands Off
Sometimes my skin will peel or flake around my mouth and nose. Resist the temptation to pick, this will only make things worse. Also avoid picking at active blemishes, as Accutane accelerates skin turnover, allowing spots to heal naturally. If you must pick at a whitehead (which I have done before too), make sure you moisturize well to speed up the healing process.
